This article synthesizes 25 years of research on the personal therapy of mental health professionals, highlighting its high prevalence and usage among seasoned practitioners, along with the personal and professional goals it serves. The author discusses the typically positive outcomes of personal therapy and the critical lessons it imparts for the practice of psychotherapy. Attention is given to the selection of personal therapists and treatment approaches for psychotherapists versus laypersons. The cumulative findings underscore that personal therapy is an emotionally impactful, interpersonally rich, and professionally transformative experience crucial for the development of health care psychologists. Additionally, the article addresses the contemporary emphasis on technical competence within clinical training programs and its potential to overshadow the importance of personal formation and maturity in psychologists. The ongoing push for empirically supported treatments (ESTs) and evidence-based practices (EBPs) is examined, revealing the controversy it incites within the psychology community, as well as the challenges in defining effective treatment protocols. The author argues that while technical training is valuable, it must not come at the expense of the human dimension in psychotherapy.
