Abstract

Language:

The safe disposal of high-level nuclear waste (HLNW) in deep geological formations necessitates understanding the transfer of radionuclides from bedrock to surface systems. This study aims to model the hydrogeochemical behavior of radionuclides, particularly Ra-226, Cs-135, and I-129, under varying hydrodynamic conditions in the Forsmark site of Sweden, where granite bedrock and Quaternary regoliths are present. Utilizing 2D reactive transport calculations, the study investigates the retention mechanisms of these radionuclides as they interact with the Quaternary soils, which serve as a crucial barrier against their migration to the biosphere. The modeling outcome categorizes the retention processes involved, providing insights into long-term environmental safety and dose contribution potential if isolation barriers fail. The findings emphasize the importance of understanding radionuclide behavior to inform waste management strategies and enhance safety protocols in HLNW disposal systems.
