Power quality has been gaining importance in the last few years, particularly due to the deregulation of electricity. Harmonic distortion at a load bus is critical for both utility providers and customers. For utilities, improving the power factor (PF) reduces system losses and expands the available generation capacity for productive uses. This letter presents a mathematical model that assists in selecting the optimal size of compensating capacitors while minimizing total costs. The model considers several constraints including power factor limitations, avoidance of resonance conditions, and compliance with IEEE Std 18-1992 limits. The proposed approach aims to provide a systematic methodology to enhance power quality and overall energy efficiency for industrial loads, thereby reflecting modern requirements and challenges in the power industry. The results show significant improvements in power factor and a reduction in utility costs, making it a valuable tool for industrial applications.
