Abstract

Language:

The biooxidation of gold-bearing arsenic concentrate from mining tailing was investigated using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans isolated from the Zloty Stok tailing heaps. The chemical and biooxidation processes were monitored by assessing the concentrations of ferrous, ferric, and arsenic in the leaching solution. Leaching experiments involved both coarse (-0.5 +0.125 mm) and fine (-0.045 mm) fractions, with samples analyzed for specific surface area and X-ray diffraction. Results indicated minor differences between the oxidation processes of the coarse and fine fractions. X-ray diffractograms supported the slow chemical dissolution of loellingite (AsFe2), a major arsenic-bearing mineral. The fine fraction experienced lower Fe and As readings attributed to the precipitation of ferric arsenate, with FTIR spectra corroborating the formation of new phases. The results suggest that the direct biooxidation mechanism primarily governed the biooxidation of the arsenic-bearing concentrate.
