The paper investigates the influence of slag composition on copper losses during smelting in a reverberatory furnace, specifically focusing on the silicate slag and copper matte byproducts of copper extraction. The objective was to quantify the degree of impact these components have on the copper content lost in the waste slag. Using multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA), the study evaluates the relationship between various slag compositions and the associated copper losses. Results from the MLRA were cross-referenced with actual measured results, demonstrating a high correlation with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.975, indicating that slag composition and the copper content in the matte significantly affect copper losses in the waste slag, achieving a probability above 97%. Furthermore, it was determined that 74% of the total copper content in the slag exists in sulfide form while 26% is in oxide form, a ratio which appears invariant to changes in slag or matte composition. This study contributes to a better understanding of the pyrometallurgical process of copper extraction and highlights critical factors influencing copper recovery efficiency.
