Typical specifications for uninterruptible power supply systems require constant regulated output voltage under variable or temporarily defaulted utility bus conditions. This operating environment results in variable dc link operation with serious derating of the UPS inverter, the output transformer, and the output filter components. This paper discusses two link voltage control methods that address this issue. The first method involves activating a boost chopper to maintain a constant dc link voltage when the battery voltage drops below its rated value, operating only during small time intervals to minimize system losses. The second method employs step-up feedback control of the battery voltage through a boost chopper, allowing for fixed inverter switching patterns and further enhancing system component utilization. Results indicate a 65% improvement in power handling capability without compromising system complexity or performance.
