This study investigates the performance of the BASF leaching aid, LixTRA 118, in improving the heap leaching process of copper ores, focusing specifically on its effects on metal recovery and acid consumption. Despite surfactants enhancing metal extraction in porous media, their application in heap leaching remains limited due to potential incompatibilities with downstream processes. The study included column leach tests on copper oxide and mixed oxide–sulfide ores with varying particle size distributions. Results indicated that the presence of LixTRA 118 significantly improved solution percolation rates by up to 18%, particularly in ores with wider particle size distributions. Furthermore, enhancements were observed in copper recovery and acid consumption, suggesting that improved wetting dynamics facilitated the kinetics of acid diffusion at both macro and micropore levels. Notably, the use of the leaching aid did not significantly affect iron recovery. The findings highlight the potential of LixTRA 118 to optimize heap leaching operations by alleviating certain limitations related to solution flow and reagent consumption, contributing valuable insights to the field of hydrometallurgy.
