This document examines the critical importance of leadership and professional ethics within the engineering field, focusing on the historical context of major industrial disasters, specifically the Bhopal disaster of 1984. The objective is to explore various leadership theories that can guide engineers in ethical decision-making and effective leadership practices. Methodologically, the paper discusses several prominent leadership theories, including Kolb's Adaption-Innovation theory, Vroom-Yetton-Jago Leadership Theory, Maslow’s Theory of Needs, and Bass’ Transformational Leadership Theory. Each theory is analyzed in terms of its relevance and application to the engineering profession, with a particular emphasis on improving safety and ethical standards in engineering practices. The results indicate that understanding and implementing these leadership theories can significantly enhance an engineer’s ability to navigate complex ethical dilemmas and foster a culture of accountability and responsibility within engineering organizations. This insight underscores the necessity of integrating ethical considerations into leadership training for engineers, ensuring a safer and more principled approach to engineering challenges. However, the complexities of human behavior and organizational structures also present ongoing challenges in applying these theories effectively.
