Abstract

Language:

This manual provides a comprehensive guide to the Physical Metallurgy Lab, aimed at undergraduate students in Materials Science and Engineering. The objective is to facilitate hands-on experience in various metallurgical techniques and to understand the fundamentals of materials behavior under different conditions. The methodology includes a series of experiments focusing on key topics such as nucleation and growth in eutectoid steel, recovery and recrystallization of materials, carburization of steel, and thermal analysis using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). In addition, students will undertake projects involving the aging response of Duralumin, microstructural identification using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and analyses of various thermal treatments like annealing and hardening. The results from these experiments are intended to develop practical skills, enhance theoretical knowledge, and encourage critical thinking regarding material properties and processing. Safety protocols are emphasized throughout the manual to ensure a safe working environment in the lab. Overall, this lab manual serves as an invaluable resource for students to gain practical insights into the study of materials science and engineering.
