This research investigates safety and security issues in residential buildings that incorporate home front shops in Makurdi, Nigeria, as a case of broader Nigerian urban contexts. It examines how the growing integration of small-scale commercial activities into residential structures, driven by urbanization and demand for commercial space, introduces structural, fire, and crime-related risks. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines literature review with field surveys, interviews, and observations to collect data on shop types, spatial layouts, existing safety and security measures, and residents’ perceptions. Findings indicate heightened risks of crime, poor lighting and surveillance, inadequate fire safety provisions, overcrowding, and insufficient emergency exits, alongside significant resident anxiety about these conditions. The study recommends clearer urban planning and design guidelines, stronger regulatory frameworks and enforcement, improved lighting and surveillance systems, enhanced fire safety measures, and active community engagement and awareness campaigns to mitigate these risks.
