Abstract

Language:

The conventional processes for recovery of silver from cyanide leach solutions include carbon adsorption, the Merrill-Crowe process, ion exchange, and solvent extraction. Among these options, electrocoagulation (EC) emerges as a promising electrochemical process that does not require high concentrations of silver in cyanide solutions to yield significant recovery results, nor does it necessitate pretreatment of cyanide solutions as seen with the Merrill-Crowe process. This study investigates the potential of electrocoagulation for recovering silver from pregnant solutions produced in the cyanidation process, utilizing iron electrodes as the anode and cathode material. The experiments revealed an average silver concentration of 52 ppm in the pregnant solution, with a remarkable recovery efficiency of 99% achieved under optimal conditions: a pH of 8, a residence time of 20 minutes, and a conductivity enhancement through the addition of sodium chloride at 4 grams per liter. Additionally, the resultant solid products from the electrocoagulation process were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, showcasing the effectiveness of this method as an alternative to the traditional Merrill-Crowe process.
