Abstract

Language:

Ammonia and ammonium salts have been recognized as effective leaching agents in hydrometallurgical processes due to their low toxicity, cost-effectiveness, and high selective recovery of metals. Recent research highlights significant advantages of ammonia leaching over traditional acid leaching, prompting a shift in the industry's approach to copper extraction. This paper aims to describe various ammonia leaching methods and summarize major research activities in the field of copper extraction. We present comparative assessments of the advantages and disadvantages of ammonia leaching versus acid leaching, alongside kinetic studies and evaluation of Eh-pH diagrams in ammonia-water systems. Additionally, we review the latest findings and novel processes related to the extraction of copper from pregnant solutions, examining applicable extraction agents. By integrating these studies, we provide a comprehensive overview of how ammonia leaching could enhance copper recovery methods, reflecting its growing significance in hydrometallurgical practices.
