Abstract

Language:

The design of solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) systems has significantly evolved over the past fifty years, reflecting changes in industry practices and technological advancements. This paper examines the historical context and recent developments in SX and EW design, focusing on innovative mixer settler arrangements that are adaptable to changing processing requirements. Additionally, the paper delves into minimalist design approaches, which minimize instrumentation and promote self-regulation, particularly in operations across Africa. Key issues such as fire risk mitigation and quality control of EW products, arising from the interaction between SX and EW processes, are critically analyzed. The authors present practical design strategies and best practices aimed at optimizing mixer settler configurations, enhancing process control, and reducing fire hazards. By addressing fundamental design principles that are frequently overlooked in commercial plants, the research aims to reduce risks associated with catastrophic failures and improve overall operational safety and efficiency in solvent extraction processes.
