Abstract

Language:

This document presents the U.S. Department of Energy's strategy and experiences related to in situ decommissioning (ISD), aimed at addressing the challenges associated with the decommissioning of environmental management sites. The objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of the ISD concept, its rationale, and the potential benefits it presents for complex-wide applications. Through an examination of current practices, regulatory frameworks, and the endorsement of the ISD approach, this report outlines a set of recommendations that are designed to enhance technology development in the field. Methodologically, the content encompasses an executive summary, detailing the status of ISD implementation, alongside issues and opportunities for improving decommissioning processes. The results highlight a need for innovative technologies and strategic regulatory support to effectively execute ISD, ensuring safe and efficient management of legacy contamination at various sites. The findings underscore the importance of ongoing collaboration and advancement in engineering practices to facilitate successful in situ decommissioning outcomes.
