Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the influence of mechanical activation and the addition of pyrite on the oxidative decomposition of chalcopyrite. The methodology involved thermoanalytical techniques and X-ray identification to analyze the reactions during the process. Results indicated that the introduction of pyrite significantly affects endothermic processes at lower temperatures, while not altering the formation temperature of CuSO4 or its quantity in the decomposition products. Furthermore, mechanical activation through grinding modified the fine and superfine structures of chalcopyrite, enabling exothermic oxidative reactions to occur at temperatures up to 180 degrees lower compared to non-activated samples. The oxidation reactions became increasingly pronounced, resulting in a higher yield of CuSO4 in the oxidative decomposition products. The findings highlight the complexity of chemical reactions occurring during the decomposition of chalcopyrite in an oxidizing environment, which holds substantial relevance in the contexts of hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy.
