Despite the commercial achievement of heap leaching of copper minerals, there is limited comprehension of the flow pattern within the heap. This study aims to investigate the extraction and surface morphology of low-grade copper sulphides under preferential flow conditions. A novel bioleaching apparatus was employed for the experiments. Results indicated that a significant amount of acid was consumed by alkaline gangue, causing only slight increases in Cu2+ and total Fe concentrations during the initial leaching stage. Ore extraction was shown to decrease with deeper locations, with extractions of the top and bottom regions being 29% and 2%, respectively. Furthermore, preferential flow was noted primarily within finer regions due to reduced irrigation rates, leading to higher extraction rates of fine ores compared to coarse ores. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed severe degradation of surface material in top ores, while middle and bottom ores showed only slight damage. Additionally, precipitation layers such as sulfur and jarosite contributed to the formation of numerous cracks on the bottom ore surface.
