This document presents a visualization of the McCabe-Thiele diagram, a vital tool in distillation engineering, aimed at enhancing understanding of distillation processes. The objective is to illustrate the fundamental concepts of the diagram, which has been instrumental in the design and operational analysis of distillation columns for over 80 years. The methodology involves a spreadsheet-based interactive analysis of the McCabe-Thiele diagram, comparing its outputs with results from advanced simulation software like Aspen Plus, which incorporates rigorous calculations to tackle multi-component systems. The results highlight the advantages of using the visual approach, demonstrating its effectiveness in helping engineers grasp complex interactions between process variables, thereby ensuring a competent and informed application of modern simulation tools. The analysis reveals that while sophisticated software can simulate chemical plants, it often fails to communicate essential design principles clearly, underlining the importance of traditional methods for education and practical troubleshooting in distillation design. This study emphasizes the relevance of the McCabe-Thiele method in contemporary engineering practices.
