During the last 50 years, the Hall-Heroult process has undergone significant improvements affecting bath chemistry, alumina feeding, and process control. Following World War II, aluminum production technology rapidly evolved through advancements in physical chemistry, material science, and engineering. This paper aims to summarize the critical developments in the aluminum industry that have occurred since 1945, particularly focusing on cell size, energy consumption, and labor productivity. The methodology involves a historical analysis of production metrics alongside technological innovations. Results indicate a dramatic increase in annual aluminum production and labor productivity—from 7 tonnes per worker in 1945 to 200 tonnes per worker in modern facilities. Furthermore, energy consumption per kilogram of aluminum has significantly decreased due to these technological improvements. The findings illustrate not only the advancements made in production capacity but also the essential integration of automation and mechanization in modern prebaked cell plants. This comprehensive overview highlights the symbiotic relationship between technological progress and production efficiency in the aluminum industry.
