Abstract

Language:

This paper is concerned with electrolysis processes aimed for production and refining of metals, a field termed electrometallurgy. The study highlights the main aspects of electrometallurgy, focusing on the electrochemical, energetic/economic, and environmental dimensions. The paper presents the peculiarities of electrorefining and electrowinning in both aqueous electrolytes and molten salts. An analysis is conducted on the impact of energetic parameters, such as cell voltage and current efficiency, on the economic justification of the electrolysis process. It is emphasized that electrolysis represents a considerably cleaner technology compared to the traditional pyrometallurgical methods for metal production and refining, thus offering a more sustainable option for metal manufacturing. Moreover, the assessment of energy consumption and associated environmental effects reaffirms the need for advancing electrochemical technologies in metallurgical applications. Overall, this comprehensive overview aims to underline the critical significance of electrometallurgical processes in modern industrial practices and their potential to contribute positively to environmental sustainability.
