In electrical power systems, insulators provide isolation between live parts and ground while also supporting conductors mechanically. Traditionally, insulators have been made from ceramic, toughened glass, or composite materials, with composite (polymer) insulators now seeing increasing use. To ensure system reliability, insulator quality must be verified before installation, and failures must be minimized through appropriate selection based on environmental conditions, pollution levels, dielectric strength requirements, and mechanical strength. This paper presents a comprehensive comparison of ceramic (porcelain) and polymer insulators used in HVAC systems. Various electrical and mechanical performance parameters, life span, and other key characteristics of ceramic and composite insulators are compared in detail to support optimal insulator selection and design.
