Abstract

Language:

In this study, we investigated the use of a mixed culture of metal-reducing microorganisms to facilitate the dissolution of manganese in a two-stage bioleaching system. The objective was to explore the efficiency of utilizing iron as a reductant for manganese extraction, while minimizing the formation of manganese carbonate precipitates. Our methodology involved a 250 mL bioreactor configured to ensure carbon dioxide generation during the iron-reduction stage, while confining manganese dioxide reduction to a subsequent stage. The results revealed that the two-stage system enhanced manganese dissolution by maintaining a higher availability of Fe2+, which was crucial for effective extraction, and reduced precipitation losses compared to a traditional single-stage approach. The findings indicate that the sequential bioleaching process not only improves manganese recovery rates but also stabilizes pH conditions conducive to metal solubilization, thereby presenting a viable alternative to conventional extraction techniques in metallurgical applications.
