In late July 2012, major power grid failures in North India left many without electricity, yet the village of Bhadwas remained largely unaffected. This article explores the concept of 'current' in India, reflecting on its physical, social, and cultural dimensions. Through a combination of historical context and contemporary narratives, the study examines how electricity flows into everyday life and the varying experiences of rural communities in relation to power accessibility. The research highlights that, despite significant investments in electrification, approximately 300 million people in India still lack access to a mains electricity grid. The article utilizes personal stories and the metaphorical implications of current to illustrate how perceptions of electricity intertwine with notions of citizenship, modernity, and social relationships. Drawing on popular culture, including references to Bollywood songs, it demonstrates how the language of current resonates across different strata of society, emphasizing the unpredictability and significance of electricity in Indian life. The findings reveal that current is not merely a utility but is deeply embedded in the fabric of modern identity in India.
