Natural radioactivity present in coal mines poses health hazards not only to miners but also to nearby populations. This study investigates the radioactivity and associated health risks from coal waste in the Dukki coal mines, which are in close proximity to the general populace and contain significant coal seams in Balochistan. The research employed high-purity germanium (HPGe) and sodium iodide (NaI) detectors to measure the levels of radionuclides including ²³²Th, ²³⁷U, and ⁴⁰K in the coal waste. The findings revealed that the concentrations of ²³²Th and ²³⁷U were below the acceptable limits; however, levels of ⁴⁰K exceeded permissible values. The measured values for ²²⁶Ra indicated a range between 11.39 to 26.09 Bq kg⁻¹ (HPGe) and 12.98 to 25.71 Bq kg⁻¹ (NaI), while ²³²Th ranged from 15.07 to 32.04 Bq kg⁻¹ (HPGe) and 19.25 to 37.56 Bq kg⁻¹ (NaI). The average concentration of ⁴⁰K was identified as a concern due to its geological association with potassium feldspar and illite. Overall, the study emphasizes the necessity for monitoring radioactive materials in coal mining areas to protect community health.
