Abstract

Language:

Microbial corrosion is the deterioration of materials associated with microorganisms in environments, especially in oil- and gas-dominated sectors. It has been widely reported to cause great losses to industrial facilities such as drainage systems, sewage structures, food-processing equipment, and oil and gas facilities. Generally, bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms are the most important microorganisms associated with microbial corrosion. The destructive nature of these microorganisms significantly impacts the integrity and lifespan of infrastructure. The review consolidates existing research on microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), emphasizing the mechanisms by which various microorganisms contribute to material degradation, and discusses current methods of detection and prevention. Additionally, it highlights advancements in protective technologies and strategies that mitigate the effects of MIC on pipelines and other industrial systems. By synthesizing findings from multiple studies, this article provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges posed by microbial corrosion and outlines future directions for research and development in this critical area.
