Hydrogenation results for fatty oils were analyzed using a nonlinear least squares method. The objective of this study was to present a kinetic model and a reaction mechanism for the hydrogenation of triglyceride oils. The methodology involved determining the rate of hydrogenation for diunsaturated fatty groups to monounsaturated groups, and the rate of the geometrical isomerizations between monounsaturated groups, which were found to be half order with respect to hydrogen concentration. In contrast, the hydrogenation rate of monounsaturated groups exhibited first-order kinetics. A detailed reaction mechanism was proposed to explain this kinetic behavior. The results indicate that the partial hydrogenation of fatty oils is crucial in producing a variety of food and industrial products, emphasizing the importance of understanding the underlying kinetics and reaction pathways. This study provides reliable kinetic data which consider the mass transfer effects that may influence the overall selectivity in hydrogenation reactions.
