Pure cadmium sulphide was leach,ed by the action of the bacterium Thio­bacillus thiooxidans in the presence of finely divided sulphur. The influence of time, temperature, pH and conei!n­tration of inoculum on the extent of the cadmium extraction was studied. Under optimum conditions, up to 72 per cent of the cadmium could be dis­solved over a six-week period. A cursory study of the role played by elemental sulphur seems to indicate that its presence is essential but that the sulphuric acid produced througn its oxidation is a minor factor in the cadmium extraction.
