Abstract

Language:

Steel is the most widely used engineering material, characterized by its primary components of iron and carbon. This article discusses the two main categories of steel: carbon steels and alloy steels, detailing their subtypes and specific properties. The objective is to provide an understanding of the different grades of steel and their applications in engineering. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the article defines carbon steels, categorized into mild, medium, and high carbon grades based on carbon content, while alloy steels are explored through low alloy steels, high strength low alloy steels, stainless steels, and tool steels, emphasizing their alloying elements. The results illustrate the distinctions and applications of these materials, highlighting mild steel's susceptibility to corrosion, and discussing alternative solutions such as weathering steel, which forms a protective layer against rust. The findings indicate the need for careful consideration of steel grades in various environments to mitigate corrosion risks. This comparison between the two types aids in selecting appropriate materials for specific engineering tasks.
