This study investigates the adsorption of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] onto loamy sand soil through batch and steady flow tests at varying pH levels of 2, 5, and 7. The results revealed that adsorption of Cr(VI) decreased with an increase in pH, with the speciation of hexavalent chromium significantly affecting the adsorption process due to different oxyanion forms present depending on the pH. The influence of soil/solution concentration ratio on chromium retention was also assessed under flow conditions at pH 2, where retention increased with higher influent concentrations. A two-site adsorption model was employed to fit the breakthrough curves of Cr(VI) solutions, allowing for the estimation of Freundlich (kF) and Langmuir (Smax) adsorption parameters using the CXTFIT code. A comparison with batch test results revealed that these tests tended to underestimate adsorption parameters; however, both approaches exhibited similar trends, even when initial solution pH was altered. This research enhances the understanding of Cr(VI) transport in contaminated soils, which is critical for the remediation of polluted areas.
