Continuous laboratory solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions was conducted using LIX 79 guanidine-based extractant to evaluate variables impacting extraction efficiency, such as aqueous pH, extractant concentration, and modifier concentration. The extraction isotherms revealed a selectivity order for the aurocyanide complex with respect to other cyanoanions: Au > Ag > Cu > Zn > Fe. Optimal extraction conditions were identified in alkaline media, with superior separation achieved within the pH range of 10.5–11.2. McCabe-Thiele diagrams demonstrated enhanced recovery when employing LIX 79 with tridecanol at 10 vol.-%. Gold stripping from the loaded organic phase occurred at pH > 12 utilizing NaOH and NaCN solutions. Pilot plant results indicated that a two-stage extraction process followed by a single stripping step provides an overall process efficiency of 92%. For scenarios with significant copper presence, a dedicated copper wash stage was suggested prior to gold stripping, with copper stripping performed at pH 10.8 and gold stripping at pH 12.0. The study provides crucial insights into the optimization of gold recovery from cyanide solutions using guanidine-based extractants.
