This document reviews the best available techniques for placer gold mining, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of various gold recovery methods. The objective is to inform artisanal miners about effective practices while considering environmental and health impacts. The methodology includes a detailed exploration of chemical, biochemical, oleophilic, magnetic, and gravitational methods for gold recovery. Chemical methods discussed include mercury amalgamation and cyanide leaching, both widely used among miners. Key biochemical techniques such as bioleaching and phytomining are also examined for their potential benefits. Oleophilic and magnetic methods are explored for their innovation in gold extraction, while gravitational techniques highlight the advancement of sluices designed for maximum recovery efficiency. Results indicate that mercury amalgamation remains a prevalent technique for recovering over 90% of gold in placer deposits but poses significant health and environmental risks. As such, this review emphasizes the need for sustainable practices and the gradual transition towards alternative recovery techniques to enhance both miner safety and environmental protection.
