Abstract

Language:

Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-6/4) has been the dominant alloy in the titanium industry, but its high costs limit its application in non-aerospace markets. This study aimed to develop a more cost-effective titanium alloy with comparable or superior properties to Ti-6/4, specifically targeting reduced costs for applications such as automobile engine valves. The new alloy, designated TIMETAL® 628, consists of Ti-6Al-1.7Fe-1Si and incorporates low-cost alloying elements while eliminating the need for expensive additions like vanadium. The methodology involved optimizing the alloy's composition and processing techniques, particularly by leveraging beta processing to reduce conversion costs and enhance product yield. The results suggest that this alternative alloy could achieve a 15 to 20% reduction in costs compared to conventional Ti-6/4, without compromising performance. These findings could facilitate the broader use of titanium alloys in high-volume, cost-sensitive applications, thereby promoting fuel efficiency and overall economic benefits.
