In recent years, the use of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) for the destruction of organic contaminants has gained significant attention, particularly those based on the Fenton reaction. This review aims to elucidate the fundamentals of the Fenton reaction and explore its applications in water and soil treatment. The primary objective is to analyze the mechanics of the reaction and assess various factors influencing its efficiency, guided by comprehensive literature on the topic. Methodologically, this article synthesizes existing reviews and studies to present a cohesive overview, highlighting critical aspects of the Fenton reaction, including radical mechanism pathways, and evaluating both theoretical and practical challenges. The results indicate that while the Fenton reaction is effective for certain organic compounds, large-scale application is impeded by issues such as by-product formation, reagent costs, and process optimization. The findings also suggest that further research into hybrid systems and improved methodologies could enhance the applicability of AOPs. This work concludes by outlining future directions and potential applications for scaling Fenton-based processes in the field of environmental science and technology.
