Abstract

Language:

This work aims to contribute to the characterization of the electrodialysis (ED) of aqueous sulfuric acid–copper sulfate solutions, particularly focusing on the presence of impurities such as As and Sb, which are typical of copper electrorefining electrolytes. A series of kinetic studies were performed in ED cells, both with and without re-circulation. The experimental conditions included varying concentrations of copper (3–9 g l−1), sulfuric acid (50 g l−1), arsenic (3 g l−1), and antimony (0.025 g l−1) at temperatures of 22 and 44 °C. The transport rates achieved ranged between 0.2–0.6 mol h−1 m−2 for copper, 0.65–2.8 for sulfate, and 0.016–0.03 for arsenic based on specific conditions. A speciation model was developed to interpret the results, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation of the performance of the studied cells. The main conclusion drawn from this research indicates that ED is a viable method for the separation and concentration of chemical species within these systems.
