Abstract

Language:

Land use and land cover change have been among the most important perceptible changes taking place around us. Although perceptible, the magnitude, variety and the spatial variability of the changes taking place has made the quantification and assessment of land use and land cover changes a challenge to scientists. This study aims to assess and analyze land use and land cover changes through the use of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System. The methodology involves employing satellite-based Remote Sensing to provide synoptic information of land use and land cover, thereby revolutionizing the study of these changes. Additionally, Geoinformatics is used to assign spatial connotations to the changes driven by factors like population pressure, climate, and terrain. The results indicate a significant ability to quantify and predict land use and land cover changes, with two case studies illustrating geospatial LULC change modeling and agent-based land use and land cover change modeling. This article provides an overview of the current trends in land use and land cover changes, emphasizing their impact on environmental degradation and ecosystem dynamics.
