For all industrial and distribution sites, the lagging power factor of electrical loads is a common problem that has traditionally been corrected manually by adding capacitor banks in parallel. This paper introduces an automatic power factor correction (APFC) system utilizing a microcontroller, which processes power factor values to dynamically enable the system and monitor when the power factor drops below a specified level (0.77). The proposed methodology implements automatic addition of capacitor banks, encoded in binary (0-7), to maintain the power factor as close to unity as possible, specifically set to an experimental case of 0.93. The findings indicate that this system effectively reduces losses and significantly increases the efficiency of electrical systems by improving the power factor, which is crucial for optimizing performance in industrial applications. The results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of automated reactive power compensation in three-phase systems.
