Abstract

Language:

An important effort of uranium mines restoration is being carried out by ENRESA in order to establish the influence of the uranium mineralisation on groundwater quality and control the efficiency of restoration works. This study focuses on the Ratones uranium mine located in Caceres, Spain, chosen for its special characteristics to evaluate restoration impacts on groundwater systems. Detailed hydrogeological studies were conducted to determine preferential flow paths and locate discharge points, with sixty-one sampling points analyzed chemically and isotopically within a 200 km2 area surrounding the mine. The redox conditions of the mine water were assessed using anoxic sampling methods. Results indicated that these conditions hindered uranium mobilization towards the preferential paths, while the dissolution of arsenopyrite resulted in elevated arsenic levels, marking significant pollution indicators. Despite high arsenic concentrations, overall groundwater quality around the mine remained unpolluted. The findings provide critical insights regarding the restoration's effectiveness and suggest pathways for improved practices in the restoration of similar mining sites.
