Aluminium is a highly utilized metal known for its light weight, conductivity, and resistance to corrosion. Its production has evolved over the last century largely due to advancements in electrolytic methods that economically refine aluminium from bauxite, the primary ore. This paper outlines the two main steps involved in aluminium production: the purification of raw materials and the reduction of alumina. Initially, bauxite is extracted, crushed, and treated with sodium hydroxide to selectively dissolve alumina while removing impurities such as iron oxide. The remaining alumina undergoes electrolysis in molten cryolite, facilitated by a carbon anode, which results in the extraction of pure aluminium. The paper also discusses environmental considerations, particularly the emission of greenhouse gases like CF4 and C2F6 during production, emphasizing the rigorous standards set to mitigate these emissions. The findings highlight the importance of precise compositional control of aluminium alloys to meet industrial requirements. Overall, this work provides a detailed examination of aluminium production processes and their implications for energy and environmental management.
