The aim of the study is to assess the evolving mine water quality of closed uranium mines in the Czech Republic. This paper focuses on the changes in mine water quality over time and spatial variability. Systematic monitoring of mine water quality was performed in 2010 at all available locations of previous uranium exploitation. Gravity flow discharges and shafts were sampled, considering multiple conditions such as geology, sample type, and time since mine flooding. Multivariate analyses were used to identify groups of samples based on similarity. Evaluation of hydrogeochemical equilibrium and evolution of mine waters was conducted using Geochemist's Workbench and PHREEQC software. Results indicated that uranium concentrations in mine waters did not predominantly exceed 0.45 mg/L, and discharges from old adits abandoned for over 40 years showed uranium concentrations below the US EPA MCL of 0.03 mg/L. Higher concentrations were found at active dewatered mines. Radium concentrations varied and generally increased after mine abandonment. Additionally, metals like Al, Co, and Ni exceeded legislative limits in specific sites. The study concluded that mine water quality changes significantly, highlighting the complexities of uranium mobility post-closure.
