Gold mining industries produce considerable amounts of waste streams containing cyanide and small quantities of copper, gold, and other heavy metals. This effluent is generally treated by the AVR process to recycle cyanide for the leaching operation; however, this process is ineffective for treating stable cyanide complexes. This paper investigates the feasibility of copper electrowinning along with residual gold, utilizing a flow-by cell with nickel foam or reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) cathodes and a cationic membrane. The findings indicate that while the process presents low average current efficiency and high energy consumption, it allows for an impressive recovery of approximately 99.6% of copper and recycles around 99.4% of cyanide from the effluent. This method is deemed environmentally friendly, showcasing its potential application in the management of waste produced from gold mining operations.
