Silk reelers in Sidlaghatta taluk, Chikkaballapur District in Karnataka state use traditional ovens called Italian based ovens (IBO) for cocoon cooking, which operate at a low efficiency of 12-15%, resulting in significant heat wastage. This study aimed to improve the efficiency of these ovens by designing and retrofitting a Heat Recovery Unit (HRU) to recover waste heat from the chimney to pre-heat water for cooking cocoons. The implementation of the HRU led to an increase in overall efficiency and a reduction in operational time, as well as creating a more comfortable working environment by minimizing heat dissipation. The positive impact of this system captured considerable interest from end users, prompting the identification of an agency to provide a prototype for commercialization. Subsequently, through policy support and subsidies, over 400 units were disseminated in the Sidlaghatta silk reeling cluster, showcasing the effectiveness of the HRU in enhancing energy efficiency and productivity in the silk reeling industry.
