This report investigates the diffusion and leaching behavior of radionuclides in category 3 waste encasement concrete and soil fill materials, prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy. The objective of the study is to assess how these materials interact with radionuclides, which is critical for understanding their environmental impact and safety in waste management. The methodology involved a series of laboratory tests to analyze the chemical composition and behavior of the encasement concrete and associated fill materials under various conditions. Specific techniques, such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), were employed to measure the concentrations of radionuclides and their leachability. Results indicated that the diffusion rates and leaching potentials vary significantly between the tested materials, providing essential data on their effectiveness in encapsulating hazardous substances. This study contributes valuable insights into the design and selection of construction materials for radioactive waste containment applications.
