This report investigates the rapid decline in milksolids production at the Lincoln University Dairy Farm (LUDF) during the spring months of October and November across the 2003/04, 2004/05, and 2005/06 seasons. The main objective was to delve deeper into the phenomenon known as the 'Spring milk dip.' Methodologically, data were collected from various dairy farms throughout New Zealand, supplemented by detailed assessments of pasture composition and production curves. The results indicated that while certain farms exhibited a milk production dip, the magnitude was not as pronounced or consistently replicable as that seen at LUDF. Notably, the 2006 season presented atypical conditions with adverse weather impacting pasture quality, which in turn influenced milk production metrics. It was concluded that the 'Spring Dip' at LUDF may primarily stem from lower pasture cover shortly after peak milk yield rather than variations in pasture composition. The study emphasizes the necessity for continuous pasture monitoring during critical periods of lactation and suggests that future research should further explore the connection between grazing practices and pasture management in relation to milksolids production dips.
