The contamination of groundwater by hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) poses significant environmental and health risks, particularly in industrialized regions such as the Asopos River Basin in Greece. This study aims to model the fate and transport of Cr(VI) in order to develop effective remediation strategies for this contaminated site. Employing calibrated numerical models, the research evaluates various groundwater remediation scenarios, analyzing the mobility of Cr(VI) and its concentration levels in relation to local industrial activities. Results indicate that Cr(VI) exhibits high toxicity and mobility, leading to elevated concentration levels in both soil and groundwater reserves of the area, which has raised public health concerns. The assessment underscores the necessity of implementing stringent environmental regulations and remediation measures to mitigate the risks associated with Cr(VI) pollution. The findings contribute valuable insights to the ongoing discourse on groundwater protection and the management of toxic contaminants, highlighting the critical role of accurate modeling in environmental engineering practices. Emphasizing an integrated approach to environmental management will be essential for addressing the complex challenges posed by hazardous substances like chromium in vulnerable ecosystems.
