Abstract

Language:

This paper provides an overview of Tenova’s modular i BOF® technology package aimed at improving endpoint detection, slop detection, and auto-tapping control, focusing on the Slop Detection System (SDS). Accurate slopping prediction is crucial in Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) operations, offering steelmakers a protective tool to enhance yield and productivity while minimizing operating costs. The i BOF® slop-detection technology employs lance vibration analysis with real-time alerts, enabling steelmakers to receive advance warnings and assess slop severity effectively. The system facilitates direct feedback control concerning lance position and oxygen flow rates to swiftly mitigate potential slopping events. This research presents a comprehensive summary of the implementation of the i BOF® technology package, including trials and substantial results, demonstrating its efficacy in improving operational safety, productivity, and equipment longevity, highlighted by a reported 99% early detection rate and a 90% success rate in slop evasion.
