The domestic copper industry has faced significant challenges due to declining ore grades, rising operational costs, and stricter environmental regulations, leading to a need for innovative mining techniques. This paper aims to explore the resurgence of copper solution mining as a viable alternative to conventional methods. The methodology includes a review of historical practices and recent advancements in solution mining technologies such as solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW), acid processing techniques, and improved leaching process efficiencies. Findings reveal that solution mining offers several advantages over traditional mining, including reduced capital and operational costs, faster implementation, and lower environmental impact, thus making it suitable for low-grade ore extraction and waste material processing. Moreover, future prospects indicate that deep-lying deposits and low-grade waste dumps will become essential targets for this method. These insights emphasize the importance of solution mining in ensuring the competitiveness and sustainability of the US copper industry in an evolving market landscape.
