This paper discusses the development and operation of Magma Copper Company's heap leaching facility at San Manuel, which has been operational since May 1986. The objective of the study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of copper extraction from the oxide ore body of the San Manuel deposit, particularly as it became available for development in the early 1980s. A comprehensive testing program comprising five phases—head sample collection, bench testing, mini-column testing, large column testing, and test heaps—was designed due to the lack of prior oxide leaching experience. Results indicated improvements in recovery rates with the implementation of surfactants, although initial results were marginal and inconclusive. Further full-scale tests demonstrated significant enhancements in recovery over a six-month period in 1994. By 1995, approximately 56.7 million tons of oxide ore had been processed, with over 73% of the acid-soluble copper successfully recovered, resulting in notable copper cathode production certified by industry standards. This paper highlights the successes and challenges faced in optimizing copper recovery through heap leaching methodologies.
