In China, Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag is traditionally used as aggregate in civil engineering, road construction, and as fertilizer. To achieve higher-value utilization, this study investigates the effect of high-temperature roasting on phase transformations and melting behavior of BOF slag from Chongqing Iron & Steel. The slag was roasted in an electric muffle furnace at different temperatures (800–1000 °C) in air, and the phase composition changes were characterized by XRD and TG-DSC. Results show that SFCA (silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum) phases form during high-temperature roasting, accompanied by oxidation of iron species and cation substitution (Fe, Al, Mg, Si) in the slag. Roasting at 1000 °C slightly but clearly lowers the softening, hemisphere, and flow temperatures of the slag compared with the unroasted material. These changes indicate that roasted BOF slag can more readily form a liquid phase during sintering, thereby improving sinter strength and reducing fuel and energy consumption in the sintering process.
