The advent and development of new technologies that will provide better yields, cleaner, and a safer environment is a global challenge for researchers. Traditional solvents used in the extraction of minerals are often hazardous, posing ecological threats. This study reports the direct bioleaching of zinc sourced from the Abakaliki-Ishiagwu complex zinc sulphide ore deposit, which predominantly contains sphalerite along with associated metals such as lead, copper, and iron. The authors explored the pre-extraction processes, including mineral comminution, froth flotation, and roasting. An agro-cyanide leachant was extracted from the leaves of the cassava plant (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and utilized without additives. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) analysis of the leached liquor after 21 days revealed the extraction of zinc at 149.25 ppm, alongside 79.25 ppm of lead, 0.25 ppm of copper, and 4.25 ppm of iron. Results indicated that prolonged contact of ZnO ore diminished extraction efficiency, showing a decline in the quantities of zinc, iron, and copper over time. The leaching mechanism remains to be fully determined, warranting further investigation in this area.
