In 2021, one of the world’s largest iron ore deposits in Kryvyi Rih (Ukraine) celebrates 140 years of its exploitation history. This deposit has played a crucial role in the development of Ukraine’s economy, serving as the backbone of its iron and steel industry. Over this period, more than 6 billion tons of marketable iron ore and approximately 20 billion tons of waste rock have been mined, contributing to Ukraine's status as the 7th largest producer and 5th largest exporter of iron ore, with a value of USD 4 billion in 2019. This chapter analyzes the historical development and current exploration status of the deposit, including processing techniques utilized to produce high-grade iron ore concentrate, sinter, and pellets. It also presents the mineralogical composition of the iron ores and the geological attributes of the deposit. Furthermore, special attention is given to the ongoing and planned modernization efforts and the implementation of innovative technologies designed to enhance competitiveness and mitigate the environmental impact of exploration.
