Abstract

Language:

This paper investigates the influence of processing and heat treatment on the microstructure and tensile properties of copper-lead alloys, which are recognized for their antifriction characteristics and are essential in low load-bearing applications. The objective is to understand how different processing techniques can produce distinct microstructures which ultimately affect tensile strength. The alloys were continuously cast into ingots using both a traditional method and a novel die-induced swirling motion prior to casting, resulting in varying microstructures. Following the casting process, the ingots underwent heat treatment at temperatures of 100 and 200°C. The study found that while heat treatment only marginally improved the ultimate tensile strength, it significantly enhanced elongation and reduction in area, particularly in alloys with fine microstructures. The results indicate that the heat treatment influences the morphology and distribution of lead particles within the copper matrix, leading to different microstructural characteristics. Overall, the findings point to the importance of processing techniques in optimizing the mechanical properties of copper-lead alloys for industrial applications.
